We bought our first home in New Jersey at the beginning of this month!
We haven’t moved in yet. We were doing some makeover for our space. I will be sharing the photos of what we did soon.
Remember to subscribe my blog and get notified when the new article comes out.

Although the furnishing is not done, we couldn’t wait and decided to celebrate the 1st birthday of my baby girl in our new place.
I wanted to do a cake smash photoshoot for my girl, but my in-laws’ place, where we are currently staying, is mostly carpeted… so it wouldn’t be a good idea to do it at their place.
Plus, an empty house is a perfect PHOTOGRAPHY STUDIO. heeh heeh heeh.

When it comes to family photos and birthdays, I always find myself being a professional photographer come in handy. heeh.
However, I don’t think that you have to be a professional photographer or have fancy equipment to shoot beautiful photos for your own family.

Most phones have pretty good cameras. You just need to learn to find the right lighting, know how to decorate/ set up a background, and have basic knowledge on editing photos, and you can create amazing family photos too!

Zhua-Zhou is a Chinese ritual held at a child’s first birthday party. Zhua means “to grab” and Zhou means “anniversary”, so it literally means “one-year-old catch”.
Parents put various objects, that symbolize career choices or personality traits, before the child. The child’s choice is used to forecast its future.
So usually a ball is for “athlete”, brushes for “artist”, a pen for “writer”, music instrument for “musician”, etc. It’s really just amuzing for the adults to watch their baby zhua-zhou.

Since my daughter loves eating so much, I thought for sure she would go for the frying pan and spatula, which she loves to play with.
To my surprise, she picked the melodica… and then she picked up a golf ball. (I don’t remember the golf ball being an option… I think my husband sneaked it in there.)
Well, I guess she will become a musician and a golf player. Cool!

My oldest also chose a music instrument when she did her zhua-zhou. She picked a ukulele.
I wonder if both my daughter will become musicians one day. They do both love music a lot, my oldest loves to sing and her sister always dance to music. 🙂

This is the background I decorated for my daughter’s cake smash photoshoot.

Pinterest!

Honestly, Im not a very creative person, but luckily I have Pinterest!
If you don’t know what it is, MAKE IT YOUR BEST FRIEND! but don’t get addicted. heeh heeh.
It is SOOOO helpful! I go on there whenever I need ideas.
I just searched “1st Birthday Photoshoot” and ”Birthday cake for babies” on Pinterest, and BOOM, I could see all the great things that other people have done for baby’s birthday.
I notice that most of the birthday photoshoots used balloons for decoration.
Although I LOVE balloons, I think they are more suitable for birthday parties. I photoshoots, I prefer something more elegant and simple. (Then I just remembered I used balloons for my older daughter’s cake smash photoshoot…. huh huh We all involve and improve. )

These are what I saved on my Pinterest board for ideas.

I got the artificial plants from Hobby Lobby. I think they make very realistic fake plants, which are great for photoshoots. Of course, real flowers and plants always look best! But they can get pricy too… and if you are careful with your props, you can probably return the ones that you don’t need after the photoshoots. For the ones I really like and will often use in my shoots, I keep them.
The cute little chair is a gift from Grandma, and she got it from Homegoods.
The background is an old pair of curtains that I own. That’s right, save your old curtains and bedsheets. They might be useful for your photoshoots.
If you don’t have a stand for the backdrop, you can always tape it to the wall, or just use a blank white wall as your background, which also looks great.

My first born was very “careful” with her cake smash… She poked the cake with her finger, and she didn’t like the cream being on her finger, so she tried to push the cake away, and got more cream on her hands. She got so mad and just started crying…
Because my second daughter is born a foodie, I thought she would act very differently from her sister. I was expecting her to “attack” the cake, but she didn’t… also just use her tiny finger to poke the cake. But she did enjoy tasting it and she didn’t cry. heeh.

I wonder how people do those “destroyed” cake smash photoshoots? Maybe the photographer or the parent just smashed the cake for the baby. Some babies had cake all over their faces… I wonder if the parents smashed the cake in their kid’s face?

Cake decorating trick for beginner bakers like me: decorate cake with fresh flowers.

Time really flies! The memory of bring my daughter back from the hospital is still vivid, like it just happened yesterday. Can’t believe she is one year old already!
For the first few months after she was born, we thought she was a really layback baby who eats well, sleeps well, and has a quiet personality. But we underestimated her… She is now louder, more dramatic, more adventurous than her older sister…
Well… neither my husband nor I am the “quiet” type of person, so I guess it’s not likely for us to have a quiet child. haha.

Hopefully, we will move into our new home soon, so I can decorate and style the rooms. I can’t wait to share more decorating fun with you all!
